چکیده

Thyroid hormones from the thyroid gland are necessary for the normal development of body organs. It was demonstrated that NO participates in the regulation of thyroid function. NO brings about oxidation reactions which will produce free radicals, and can start chain reactions that damage cells. This leads to the production of ROS. These oxidants can damage cells by starting chemical chain reactions such as lipid peroxidation, or the oxidizing DNA or proteins. The oxidation status was assessed by measuring the level of nitric oxide, total antioxidants and the antioxidant enzyme, Super Oxide Dismutase (SOD) in the blood. All the data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA followed by paired t-test. The level of significance was considered at P> 0.05.Serum nitric oxide and total antioxidants were decreased significantly in hyperthyroidism and almost no change in hypothyroidism when compared to the normal levels. Further, erythrocyte super oxide dismutase (SOD) was significantly high in patients with hyperthyroidism and it is almost same in hypothyroidism and normal controls. The result indicates that the thyroid hormone has a pro-oxidant effect and increases the oxygen free radical production and hence the resultant decrease in antioxidant state in case of hyperthyroidism when compared to the normal and hypothyroidism.

Cardiac up-regulation of apolipoprotein D in a rat model of hypo- and hyperthyroidism

Introduction: Cardiac tissue is one of the organs affected by thyroid hormones imbalances. Apolipoprotein D is a multifunctional glycoprotein that is expressed in various tissues including heart tissue. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism on the level of apolipoprotein D protein in the heart tissue. Materials and Methods: In order to induc...

Hypothyroidism, Oxidative Stress and Reproduction

In women, both hyperand hypo-thyroidism may result in menstrual disturbances. In hyperthyroidism the most common manifestations are simple oligomenorrhea and anovulatory cycles. Hypothyroidism results in changes in cycle length, amount of bleeding, and usually is associated with abnormal menstrual cycles characterized mainly by polymenorrhea and anovulatory cycles (Krassas et al., 1999). Also s...

Oxidative Stress and Antioxidant Status in Hypo- and Hyperthyroidism

Thyroid hormones are involved in the regulation of basal metabolic state and in oxidative metabolism [1]. They can cause many changes in the number and activity of mitochondrial respiratory chain components. This may result in the increased generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) [2,3]. Oxidative stress is a general term used to describe a state of damage caused by ROS [4]. ROS have a high ...

Lipid Abnormalities and Cardiometabolic Risk in Patients with Overt and Subclinical Thyroid Disease

Dyslipidemia is a common finding in patients with thyroid disease, explained by the adverse effects of thyroid hormones in almost all steps of lipid metabolism. Not only overt but also subclinical hypo- and hyperthyroidism, through different mechanisms, are associated with lipid alterations, mainly concerning total and LDL cholesterol and less often HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, lipoprotein (...

The Effects of Hypo- and Hyperthyroidism on Glucose 6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Activities in Regions of Rat Brain

The variations of glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) activity in different brain regions of normal, hypo- and hyperthyroid rats were investigated. Hypo- and hyperthyrodism were experimentaly induced by administration of methimazol and liothyronine, respectively. In normal rats, midbrain had the minimum (70 mU/mg) and cerebral cortex the maximum (349 mU/mg) G6PD activity. Hyperthyrodism in...

Effects of thyroid hormones on the antioxidative status in the uterus of young adult rats

Thyroid hormones and oxidative stress play significant roles in the normal functioning of the female reproductive system. Nitric oxide (NO), a free radical synthesized by nitric oxide synthases (NOS), participates in the regulation of thyroid function and is also a good biomarker for assessment of the oxidative stress status. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate effects of th...
